I have been asked many times how I got into Health & Wellness. The truth is, I've always been interested in the subject. In fifth grade, I volunteered to help the gym teacher at the beginning of the school day. I didn't love the teacher or sports, but I loved moving my body! I loved that if we finished helping quickly, we would get to play with balls, hula hoops, or jump ropes for a few minutes.
I was not overly interested in sports, but I was always drawn towards physical activity. This led me to major in Athletic Training in college. When people hear Athletic Training, they usually think of something like Personal Training, however, Athletic Trainers are under the Sports Medicine umbrella. Athletic Trainers specialize in prevention, emergency care, assessment, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of athletic injuries and illnesses. I loved working one-on-one with athletes, helping them through tough injuries and rehabilitating them back to play. After seeing injury after injury, I felt that more focus needed to be placed on prevention, but there was never enough time. This is what led me to Public Health.
In graduate school, I earned my Master's Degree in Global Public Health. What is Public Health? Public Health focused on preventing injuries and disease at a community level. I was fascinated by the idea of preventing disease and injuries before they happen. I also became interested in health behavior change. Why do people change their behaviors? For example, we know that physical activity is good for us, but we don't always do it. If knowledge was the only thing that motivated behavior change, it would be a lot easier!
My interest in health behavior change led me to become a Health & Wellness Coach. Health & Wellness Coaches are experts in behavior change and helping people make positive changes in their lives. We have studied and practiced evidence-based methods for helping people achieve their health goals.
I am passionate about helping people improve their health and well-being. I believe that everyone deserves to live a healthy and happy life. I am excited to use my skills and knowledge to help people make positive changes in their lives.
