Have you ever had a poor night's sleep, and the next day you double up on coffee, then move through the day like a zombie? Typically, you'd expect the following night to offer some much-needed rest as your head hits the pillow. But what if your body fails to deliver the deeply desired restful sleep? What if you just lie there, beyond exhausted, wondering when sleep will takeover? As the hours tick by, you wonder if you will even sleep at all. When morning hits, sleep finally begins to take over but now you have to get up, feeling groggy with a slight headache, and you do it all over again.... and again and again. Next, you start googling "how to sleep better", or "how to get deep sleep", or "how to fall asleep easier", and you try every hack and recommendation you can find, but still no relief. This is the reality of a sleep disorder.
In our society, there is a normalization of lack of sleep that can cause delay for those struggling in seeking help. Why is that? For many, it's a mix of factors. There's a sense of shame, believing we're doing something wrong, that we are bringing this on ourselves. We might also assume that everyone struggles with sleep, dismissing our own issues as mere complaints. Additionally, there's the fear that seeking medical care will yield no solutions beyond simplistic advice to "just relax" or "it's just stress". There's also the belief that it's just the way we are, and nothing can be done.
However, no matter how hard we try, sleep is something that is outside of our control. It's something our bodies should be doing for us. We can create a good environment for sleep, but if we are doing everything we can, and still having trouble, this is a sign to get help. Trusting your instincts and acknowledging your body's signals is an act of courage, especially in the face of skepticism from others. Remember, there are specialists dedicated to helping you achieve restful sleep, and you are not alone in your journey.
